Iceland Impasse Set To End As Three Parties Agree To Form Government

[ 10 Jan 2017 10:18 ]

REYKJAVIK (Alliance News) - Iceland is Tuesday set to get a new government comprising three parties, ending an impasse since the October elections.

The conservative Independence Party was to partner with the Reform Party and Bright Future, both labelled liberal.

Bjarni Benediktsson, leader of the Independence Party, was tipped to be prime minister and welcomed that the boards of all three parties late Monday endorsed a government platform.

"I am very happy with the agreement," he said.

The three party leaders were later Tuesday expected to address a news conference.

The three parties control 32 seats giving them a slim majority in the 63-seat legislature.

The elections, scheduled for April 2017, were held triggered early and held in October when then-premier Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson resigned after data from the Panama Papers leak suggested he and his wife had an offshore company in the British Virgin Islands. Both denied wrongdoing.

But the polls delivered a fragmented parliament with seven parties.

Several previous attempts to form a government failed. The equation was complicated by the fact that several parties ruled out working together.

Benediktsson's party was part of the ousted centre-right coalition. In the elections it won 21 seats, making it the largest in the legislature.
