Global media company Fortune joined the London Stock Exchange opening ceremony on September 16 to celebrate the launch of the Fortune 500 Europe ranking for 2026.
Now in its fourth year, the list highlights the continent’s 500 biggest companies by revenue, underscoring the scale and influence of Europe’s corporate giants. Combined, the businesses on the 2026 list generated $15.5 trillion of revenue, up 4% from last year. The top 10 alone account for more than $2 trillion in revenue, with energy, finance, and automotive companies dominating the upper ranks.
Volkswagen tops the rankings for the third year running, with $363 billion in revenue. The energy and industrial giants Shell, Glencore, BP, and TotalEnergies complete the top five. Financials is the largest sector in the list, responsible for 24% of revenue, 40% of profits, and 14% of employees.
For the first time in the Fortune 500 Europe’s history, Germany no longer contributes the most companies to the list. The UK takes the lead with 76 companies, followed by Germany with 73 and France with 66.
“The Fortune 500 Europe is more than a numerical ranking; it is the definitive benchmark of European business scale and a live indicator of macroeconomic transformation. When analysed strategically, this list reflects current corporate success just as much as it maps where Europe is heading next.”

Following the unveiling of the Fortune 500 Europe and ringing of the opening bell, Fortune will welcome C-suite leaders from across Europe and the Middle East to its CEO Forum in London. There, leaders from Anthropic, Ferrari, Mastercard, Société Générale, Shell, EDF, NatWest, Open AI, Palantir, Honeywell, Microsoft, Tech Mahindra and many others will take part in a series of closed-door sessions moderated by Fortune editors, to discuss Europe’s growth opportunities and share best practices.
