FTSE Russell is a leading global provider of benchmarks, analytics and data solutions, including a range of widely used sustainable investment indices, for investors worldwide. It applies the highest industry standards in index design and governance, using transparent, rules‑based methodologies informed by independent committees of leading market participants.
Twenty-five years’ ago, it launched the FTSE4Good Index Series at a time when sustainable investment was barely on the financial sector’s radar. There was limited corporate reporting of ESG data and almost no regulation compelling disclosure.
FTSE4Good was created to bring a structured, transparent and evidence‑based approach to assessing corporate sustainability performance. It was an important step forward, not just for indices, but to help propel sustainability into the mainstream of the investment world.
Over the past 25 years, the FTSE4Good indices and associated index families have attracted a steadily increasing volume of assets, they’ve been adopted around the world, national exchanges have launched index variants in countries such as Japan, Malaysia, and Taiwan, and leading companies have improved their sustainability performance as the FTSE4Good threshold has risen.
“FTSE4Good has played an important role in the story of how the financial sector has integrated sustainability considerations into decision making. This 25-year milestone offers an opportunity to reflect on the evolution of the FTSE4Good Index Series to date and look ahead to its future as we continue to reflect the changing demands of sustainable investors.”
