The London Stock Exchange was honoured to host the African Development Bank Group (AfDB) for today’s Market Close ceremony, marking a historic moment in the deepening partnership between global capital markets and Africa’s development ambitions.
We were delighted to welcome Dr Sidi Ould Tah, President of the African Development Bank Group, alongside a distinguished delegation of senior executives and governors from across Africa and international development institutions. Their presence underscores AfDB’s pivotal role in shaping Africa’s financial future and mobilising capital for transformative growth.
Today’s ceremony comes at a dynamic time for the Bank and the continent. Over the past year, AfDB has reinforced its reputation as an innovative market leader, introducing groundbreaking instruments such as hybrid capital to strengthen its balance sheet and expand its capacity to finance infrastructure, social development, and climate resilience.
The Market Close event symbolises more than a ceremonial bell ringing; it reflects AfDB’s commitment to leveraging international capital markets to accelerate Africa’s green transition and inclusive growth. In 2027, the African Development Fund plans to access the capital markets for the first time in its history, broadening its resource base and charting a sustainable financing path that reduces reliance on donor contributions and unlocks long-term investment for Africa’s future. In its first issuance, it will look to access UA 1 billion, leveraging its equity to better serve its clients.
“Our collaboration with the London Stock Exchange shows that when financial innovation meets a clear vision for transformational development, the possibilities for progress are limitless. We look forward to continuing this strong partnership, leveraging global markets to mobilise significant investment resources for a prosperous and inclusive Africa.”
Dr. Sidi Ould Tah
