LCH ForexClear collaborates with CLS to streamline FX clearing and settlement

In response to feedback from our clearing participants, LCH ForexClear is streamlining FX clearing and settlement with the launch of the redesigned CLSClearedFX service – a new settlement model that brings the cleared and bilateral FX markets into closer alignment, making the settlement journey much simpler and more efficient.

The current FX settlement process poses a barrier to entry for prospective clearing members. As the first central counterparty (CCP) to go live on CLS’s redesigned CLSClearedFX service, LCH ForexClear is clearing the way for simpler onboarding and more efficient clearing and settlement.

Our new settlement model, which integrates cleared deliverable FX spot, forwards and options into the main CLSSettlement session, marks the evolution of LCH ForexClear’s deliverable FX clearing solution.

CLSClearedFX is a payment-versus-payment (PvP) settlement service that allows CCPs and their clearing members to effectively mitigate settlement risk when settling cleared FX and derivative trades. By submitting cleared FX settlement obligations into the main CLSSettlement session, we are unifying the cleared and bilateral FX markets, making the settlement journey for cleared trades much simpler and more efficient.

As all cleared deliverable FX settlements will be processed in the main CLSSettlement session, members will benefit from the elimination of bifurcated liquidity, creating funding efficiencies for clearing members. This also removes the need for separate workflows, thereby reducing the costs associated with building the infrastructure and settling cleared trades.

This significant milestone for the FX market allows participants to take advantage of the benefits clearing offers, along with guaranteed settlement and funding efficiencies via LCH’s access to CLSSettlement. The integration offers CCPs and their clearing members enhanced risk mitigation, significantly improved operational efficiencies and greater liquidity benefits through a consolidated settlement model. They can also benefit from CLSSettlement’s resilient settlement model with robust failure management processes.

Prospective sell-side clearing participants (including some CLS settlement members) with significant FX exposures will potentially be able to benefit from lower capital requirements, margin offsets and reduce operational risk from clearing.
