Preparing your business for the transition to low-carbon

The importance of the low-carbon transition

To achieve emissions reduction targets and keep global temperature rise to less than two degrees higher than pre-industrial levels, a whole economy transition to low-carbon is needed.

Investors are increasingly allocating capital to companies that have clear plans for handling climate-related risks and opportunities to ensure their portfolios are climate resilient. Creating and following credible transition plans will help companies with carbon-focussed operating models access these investments and prepare their business for a net-zero future.

We want to provide companies on our markets with the tools to report on climate issues effectively. This will help companies access capital from sustainability-led investors and ensure clear communication between investors and businesses.

London Stock Exchange offers tools which will help your company:

  • Understand and assess current climate reporting and transition planning
  • Discover best practice and areas for improvement in climate reporting
  • Implement transition plans to meet your business goals
  • Access the capital required to transition to low-carbon operating models
  1. 1

As more investors focus on building climate resilient and Paris-aligned portfolios, they are allocating capital to companies with clear frameworks for managing climate-related risks and opportunities. Our Climate Governance Score, utilising the methodology of the Transition Pathway Initiatives’ Management Quality Score, assesses a company’s carbon management practices and how climate change considerations are incorporated into their business strategy. The score can help you understand where you are on your net zero journey compared to your industry peers and what steps you can take to improve.

For companies that have data captured by FTSE Russell, you can access your score in the Issuer Services platform on a confidential basis.

    Climate Reporting Guidance

Our Climate Reporting guidance, published in 2021 based on the model guidance developed by the UN Sustainable Stock Exchanges initiative (UN SSE), gives a practical guide on implementing TCFD recommendations. All Main Market companies and any UK-registered companies with over 500 employees are currently in scope of mandatory TCFD disclosures. In 2024, we also published sustainability-reporting guidance to reflect the evolving sustainability reporting landscape and the launch of the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) standards as a global baseline. Issuers can use this to discover best practice sustainability reporting and utilise the climate reporting guidance to help meet their current climate disclosure obligations.

    TCFD Training Videos

The London Stock Exchange is committed to building climate understanding among the issuer community through thought leadership and training. Our TCFD reporting video series, created in partnership with the UN SSE initiative, features practical training that will help you implement the recommendations of TCFD. The series is divided into two parts, comprising bitesize videos relating to different elements of TCFD. The videos, available to everyone via the Issuer Services platform, are a readily accessible resource for companies to view at their own pace.

The public markets enable companies to access capital to implement their transition plans. Whether this is debt or equity finance, companies with credible transition strategies can access sustainability-led investors to transform their businesses in preparation for the low-carbon economy.

    Sustainable Bond Market

The Sustainable Bond Market is designed to increase the visibility of and access by investors for debt securities meeting internationally recognised sustainability standards. The Sustainable Bond Market includes ‘use of proceeds’, transition and issuer level segments providing issuers with flexibility to raise the sustainable capital required to meet their specific sustainability objectives.

London Stock Exchange's Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM)

The VCM designation may be applied to funds or operating companies that are admitted to the Main Market or AIM and invest, or intend to invest, in climate change mitigation projects that are expected to yield carbon credits that may be issued to investors as a dividend in specie.

The VCM designation creates a new way for companies seeking to offset their emissions on their net-zero journey and need a long-term supply of carbon credits. It also enables investment exposure for institutional and impact investors to this asset class.
