London Stock Exchange Group welcomes the Green Horizon Summit
The City of London Corporation opened London’s markets for trading today by welcoming global leaders from the private and public sectors to the Green Horizon Summit.
In partnership with the Green Finance Institute and the World Economic Forum, the Summit will set out what finance is doing and must do to meet the Paris goals of 1.5 degrees warming or less.
If COP21 set out what nations the world over must do to mitigate climate change, COP26 in Glasgow must set how we are going to finance it. The summit will explore how governments and investors can work together to mobilise capital at scale.
Demand-side commitments have been made by nation-states through NDCs and they are starting to be met by net-zero commitments from the supply-side. Yet a sophisticated dialogue, that captures all of policy and regulation, capital markets, and the changing demands of investors, from retail savers to global asset owners, is essential to raise and move the capital we need.
This Summit will begin a year-long programme that starts with this dialogue and ends with concrete action in Glasgow 2021. That action must not be in the form of pledges and signatures. It must be in the form of a different approach from everyone across the financial services value chain, and the system of global regulation that underpins it.
