The London markets were today opened by Mr Paul Dollman, Group Finance Director of John Menzies plc, to celebrate the Company’s 50 year anniversary of being quoted on the London Stock Exchange.

The Company has a long history of trading in the UK dating back to 1833 when Mr John Menzies first set up his business on Princes Street in Edinburgh.  Having had a somewhat slow start, he identified an opportunity in the publishing wholesaling business and won exclusive rights to distribute Charles Dickens’ first novel, Pickwick Papers, in the East of Scotland.  This marked the beginning of a lifelong friendship and business relationship between Mr Menzies and Charles Dickens.

From those small beginnings and one man’s vision, the Company grew and diversified, reporting a profit in 1962 of £410,910.  A subsequent repositioning of the Company in 1997 to concentrate on our unrivalled strength in time-critical logistics with our Distribution operation saw Menzies enter into Aviation Services, which at the time was still a small but highly promising opportunity.

The Company has continued to grow and now employs over 21,000 people worldwide with an annual profit of £59.9m in 2011.  John Menzies plc maintains its focus on its two divisions, Distribution and Aviation Services, and the exciting opportunities that both of these sectors offer.
