MONTHLY MARKET REPORT - No. 4 (October 2001)

 

  • RECORD NUMBER OF TRADES IN OCTOBER - OVER 5m TRADES

     

  • SETS TRADING ACTIVITY RECORD BROKEN AGAIN - 1.8m TRADES IN OCTOBER (PREVIOUS RECORD 1.5m IN SEPTEMBER)

     

Trading on the London Stock Exchange's markets during October set new records. The total number of trades was 5.03 million - up 51 per cent on October 2000 (3.34 million). This is the first time there have been more than 5 million trades in one month. The average daily figure in October was 219,000 trades, compared with 152,000 in the same month last year.

 

For the year to date there have now been 40.8 million trades - already greater than for the whole of 2000 (40.7 million).

 

There was a new record of 1.8 million trades on SETS, the Exchange's electronic order book, during October. This beats the previous record of 1.5 million set in September and represents an increase of 123 per cent over October 2000. This is the sixth month this year that a new record has been set for the number of trades on SETS.

 

During the month, 13 companies joined our markets including 6 IPOs. The London Stock Exchange has the most successful IPO markets in Europe for 2001, accounting for 58 per cent of all European IPOs.*
